Read : Deuteronomy 9:1-6

Thoughts from: Valerie Hires

It’s time for the Israelites to cross over the Jordan and take the land God promised many years before. What about those scary giants greater and mightier?

Back in 1968, we were getting ready to go the Philippines as God had led to bring God’s Word to those who’d never heard. We had been through training to live among a people of a different culture and language, we had prepared to live where there were probably no modern conveniences. But now I was pregnant with our first child-a new challenge! My giants were fears and anxieties built by those who fed me their fears.

The prophet had some reassuring words, “He who goes over before you as a consuming fire is the Lord your God…he will destroy them (my fears)…you shall drive them out…as the Lord has promised you.” Ah, I was walking by faith, trusting God to lead and keep me as we crossed over our Big Jordan (the Pacific Ocean!). He provided us with a good doctor and a Mission hospital nearby, daily radio connection with a missionary doctor not only for our family but as we ministered to those we lived among.

We didn’t go because of anything we had done, we went in obedience and trust in God’s purpose for us to reach the Manobo people with God’s Word in their language so they also could be led by the Spirit as they learned from him. He went before us to prepare the way and consume the giants we thought were before us. It was because of his righteousness that he wanted these people to be able to choose His way too. We all can be and are “stiffnecked people”, there is certainly nothing righteous in us. It is for Christ’s sake that God saves us and is pleased when we are His messengers of the Good News. Here is the seed for the gospel of the grace of God.
