Read : Isaiah 51:1-11
Thoughts from: Janis VanKeuren
Have you ever felt oppressed? Like the weight of your problems were crushing life right out of you? There are times when each of us feels overwhelmed and we may even wonder if God will deliver us or if He is listening to our cries. In this passage of Isaiah, God addresses the oppression of the Israelites during the Babylonian exile. God comforts His people through Isaiah. He wants them to know He will deliver them and they will see His glory.
In the first three verses, God calls to those who seek him. That’s us. He says, “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the Lord;…” He reminds them of His mighty miracles. If He could bring forth multitudes of people from barren Abraham and Sarah, then He certainly can deliver the Israelites from the Babylonians.
What weight is crushing you today? Is it financial? Does it involve your children? Do you feel abandoned? Do your prayers seem to hit a brick wall? In Isaiah 51:3, the Lord assures His people He will make their desert blossom as the garden of Eden. In verse 8, He notes His righteousness will be forever and His salvation for all time.
While we await complete deliverance from our trials in heaven, the Lord comforts us in verse 11 that even here “…they [we] shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”
Heavenly Father, we pray for your comfort to lift us out from under the oppression we are enduring today. Let your joy and gladness fall upon us as we await our everlasting joy.
